Brandon Medical, manufacturers of innovative medical lighting solutions have launched a very needed product - the Neonatal Transilluminator. In conjunction with Neonatal Perspectives Ltd, a truly useful product has been designed utilising appropriate medical experience in combination with advanced design technology - an innovative product from a trusted supplier. The two companies worked closely with the neonatal units of Hope Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital to realise the common goal of producing a safe device for the newborn population that met all current safety standards. |
| Brandon Medical's Managing Director, Graeme Hall, states "Neonatal transillumination" has been a useful tool in the neonatal intensive care unit for many years, but with the drawback of few devices designed specifically for the purpose. Older, non-CE marked products have now been withdrawn from the market as they do not meet current safety standards. We recognised a market need for a well designed, safe cold light designed entirely around the newborn and preterm populations." |

The primary use of the Neonatal Transilluminator will be for facilitating venous and arterial access, as well as diagnosis and location of pulmonary air-leaks and siting chest drains. The light incorporates a 'one-handed use' design philosophy to assist the clinician in conducting delicate procedures in very small patients. |

Specialists within neonatal medicine required a transilluminator that was practical, as well as safe. By incorporating a long fibreoptic cable with a shaped end piece, Brandon Medical have succeeded in achieving easy access into incubators combined with simple one-handed application of the light to the baby. Variable light intensity copes with different applications and ambient light conditions. The unit has been designed to exceed current safety standards and has been extensively tested by a number of tertiary neonatal services. |
The unit has also been independently tested and is approved for the specific use of neonatal transillumination under the Medical Device Directive 93/42/EEC and boasts an ISO 9001 certificate. The Neonatal Transilluminator is exclusively marketed by Neonatal Perspectives Ltd, who welcome enquiries.
