** World Bank Chooses Brandon Medical **

Brandon Medical has beaten 27 other companies to secure a major export contract to the Federation of Bosnia-Hercegovina.

The company will be supplying its range of Galaxy Operating Theatre Lamps to 15 hospitals and clinics throughout the region as part of a $5 million World Bank funded reconstruction programme.
Two years ago the World Bank announced it was to fund the refurbishment and re-equipping of those hospitals that had not been totally decimated by the war. At that time the Country’s healthcare system was running at only 10-15% capacity of pre-war levels. Through their contracts at the British Embassy and the Ministry for Health in Bosnia, Brandon developed links with a local trading partner in the Bosnian capital Sarajevo. Brandon put forward a tender, in conjunction with some of Britain’s major healthcare companies to offer a package of equipment through the Essential Hospital Services Project. The country is still deemed too unstable for a full infrastructure rebuilding programme, illustrated by the fact that United Nations armoured vehicles were used to ferry Brandon employees throughout the region.

International Excellence:
The path to global growth.

Brandon Medical experienced continued international success during 1997 thanks to a successful international marketing programme.

The company is surging forward with the constant introduction of new products and the opening of new markets. Africa was particularly fruitful for Brandon with new exports to Egypt, the opening of two hospitals in Ghna and a deal worth £200,000 for the supply of operating theatre lights to Uganda. The company's presence at various international exhibitions, such as Medica and Interhospital in Germany and Arab Health in Dubai, reaped dividends throughout the globe. Portugal became a newmarket for Brandon as lights were exported to Benefica Football Club for use in their physiotherapy suites. In South America, Colombia became a new trading partner, and the King Abdullah Hospital in Jordan benefited from Brandon expertise when the company was invited to advise on the operating theatre controls for this new show piece hospital. China nd Bosnia were other new markets keen to buy Brandon. It is no surprise then that the company won prestigious Quality of Service award from the DTI for their exporting achievements. Brandon ensures continued success by maintaining high customer service levels and high quality products. This level of customer care coupled with the most advanced products on the market ensures a level of customer satisfaction hard to come by lsewhere.

New government signals new installations for Brandon.

The Royal Battle and Berkshire Hospital purchased a major operating lamp for it's maternity unit to complete the refurbishment of four theatres by Brandon. Throughout the year the hospital also acquired a Galaxy 51 for their Eye Theatre and had 36 mobile lamps on loan whilst building work was in progress. The refurbishment work on the day surgery unit of the Wrexham Maelor Hospital in Wales has finally been completed and all four theatres now containing Brandon Galaxy lamps along with Brandon Emergency Power Units. Other customers include the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital whom over the last 5 years, have replaced all the lamps in their 7 operating theatre complex with Brandon Medical products replacing those of three other manufacturers.

Development of Multifunctional
Examination Lamp.

Brandon Medical has introduced a new generation of examination lamps featuring the
most advanced light sources and filtration techniques. The Coolview range has been designed using the latest surgical lamp technology to provide users with its most advanced range of examination lamps yet.

The major benefit to the user is the generation of intense light with the ideal characteristics for medical examinations. The light from Coolview is exceptionally bright with intensity levels of up to 52,000 Lux. However, the light remains cool due to the use of modern dichroic heat filters. The colours of the light can be accurately corrected to the colour of cool daylight by specifying the optional colour filter. All models are fitted with a facility to dim the lamp for delicate examinations and to reduce eyestrain. Whilst Coolview C50 models provide the optimum in high intensity illumination the Coolview C35 models offer the utmost in versatility. The C35 models are the first products of their type to offer both concentrated spot lighting and diffused lighting in the same lamp, they are ideal for examinations over both large and small wound sites. We believe the Coolview 35 is the best product yet for General Practice consulting rooms. The Coolview range is extremely versatile. Brandon realize that all applications are unique, so we have devised a system of options by which one may choose the combination most suited to an individual Practitioner's needs. The Specifier simply chooses the lamp head C50, C35, or C20, the type of articulated arm he/she prefers, the type of mounting, and whether he/she needs the filter option. All Coolview units are supplied complete with the lamp (bulb) and the appropriate mounting brackets.

All Brandon products are designed with safety and quality in mind and Coolview is no exception. The lamps are manufactured to stringent ISO9001 procedures to ensure the highest quality. They are CE marked for compliance to all European Union legislation and meet IEC598-2-25 electrical safety standards.

1943-1998 55 years of excellence.

Brandon Medical celebrate 55 years in 1998. From our origins in 1943 as an electrical motor rewinder, we have developed into a high technology company with a truly international business. The secret of our success is our commitment to delivering the best possible service and the most advanced products. 1998 is going to be another exciting year for us. The Company is expanding rapidly with new products, new staff and new markets. We're looking forward to the next 55 years.

The company also has excellent partnership arrangements for the supply of medical service pendants and medical video systems. These elements all add up to a unique ability to supply seamless, integrated packages of equipment in the certain knowledge that there will be total compatibility between component units. They will be rewarded by reductions in project planning time, installation time and the associated costs. A further advantage is a reduction from the normal several suppliers down to one.

Integrated systems from Brandon Medical have recently been chosen for overseas projects as well as those in Britain. Nine packages were recently exported to Uganda as part of a Government up-grade programme of state hospitals.

Brandon are specialists in the design of bespoke systems to meet the client's specific requirements. We offer full management service from design to installation and will liaise with all parties and suppliers to ensure full client satisfaction with the minimum of hassle.

Brandon Medical Operating Theatre Control Panels use only the highest quality materials and components. The fabricated construction consists of a 2 mm thick stainless steel facia and mild steel back box, powder coated in epoxy polyester paint. All apertures in the facia are laser cut to produce a high quality finished edge. All our materials, clocks, X-ray viewer screens, switchgear and components are sourced from reputable European sources. Our Emergency Power Systems can be either built into our control panels or supplied as separate stand-alone units. All units are sophisticated switched mode chargers and electronic battery management. A wide variety of configurations and specifications are available to suit all applications. Standard units feature, charge fail and mains healthy indicators, low voltage warning, low voltage disconnect and low voltage override features.

The low voltage override facility is important for critical care areas. When the emergency supply has been used to the point where the batteries are virtually discharged, an audible alarm sounds to warn the clinicians that power is about to be disconnected. If they do not take any further action, the low voltage disconnect facility will automatically come into action to protect the batteries from damage in deep discharge. However, the clinicians can use the override to continue to use the emergency power, although this is likely to cause damage to the battery pack. After all, a patient's life is much more valuable than a set of batteries.

Brandon Medical has been awarded a £800,000 grant from the Department of Health under the MedLINK scheme for research into the design of "thinking lights".

In conjunction with the Imperial College, School of Science and Technology, Brandon will research a new concept in "intelligent" surgical lighting for operating theatres, which aims to reduce the risk of patient infection during operations and to reduce operational costs for hospitals. The "thinking lights" will allow the surgeon to direct the light to the required area without having to touch the lamp itself. At present, inadequate lighting of vital structures includes nerves and blood vessels can lead to accidental damage during surgery. The problem is magnified by the fact that surgeons do not wish to touch the operating lights for fear of picking up bacteria from non-sterile surfaces. When lamps are moved to illuminate specific areas there is a 14% chance that the patient will pick up an infection from bacteria on lamp handles. The new system would bring an end to this risk by using artificial intelligence to manoeuvre the lights.
